& The Wikireader



Summary

WikiReader is a project to deliver an offline, text-only version of Wikipedia on a mobile device. The project is sponsored by Openmoko and its source code has been released.

Snijders IT has compiled a new version of the wikipedia dataset which includes the full dutch set (~ 590.000 articles) plus the regular english version (~ 3.100.000 articles).

Through a simple touchscreen button in the 'search' screen you can switch between the two encyclopedias.

There is no need anymore for these files since the Wikireader team has provided dutch, english & many other languages pre-compiled in their latest quarterly update. Also wiktionary and some other nice features are available now so I highly recommend getting the update from thewikireader.com: Summer 2010 Update.

How to install the combined dutch & english dataset on your wikireader?

1. Open the back battery door.
Slide the door in the direction indicated by the arrow in the illustrator here.

2. Remove the two AAA batteries.

3. Remove the memory card.
Hold the case vertically and you will see a small black bar (labeled SD in the illustration at right). This is the memory card. Press down to partially eject the memory card. Grasp the card between your forefinger and thumb and gently lift to remove.

4. Copy new update to the memory card. Using your microSD card reader, first delete all the existing files on your memory card. Then extract the contents of the '20100327' directory in the downloaded file directly onto your memory card.

4. Replace the memory card.

5. Replace the batteries, close the door.

6. You're done!
